Academic Advising

The institution currently utilizes a Split Model of advising, as defined by the National Academic Advising Association, or the Global Community for Academic Advising. Within this framework, students are afforded the opportunity to interact with faculty advisors, as well as professional advisors within the school’s Clinical Education Enhancement Department (C-EED). The C-EED uses the Appreciative Advising model when working with students. Students can interact with any C-EED faculty advisor they choose. Advising is designed to foster close faculty and student interactions that promote holistic student development and provide institutional guidance. Students will be able to seek advice on all the following clinical needs:

  • Students enrolled in FM1/IM1 with questions regarding Foundations of Clinical Medicine.
  • Concerns about Step 1 results
  • Assistance with improving performance on Subject Shelf exams.
  • Assistance with preparing for the Comprehensive Clinical Science Exam (CCSE).
  • Questions about the Clinical Scholars Programs.
  • Students under Satisfactory Academic Performance (SAP) conditions.
  • Students who are unsuccessful at Step 2 CK.
  • Students readmitted to AUA.
  • Extension of AUA-Kaplan CK Study Resources.

One-on One Advising Services includes:

  • Academic counseling via phone, Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
  • Assessment of student learning challenges.
  • Information on learning resources and study and test-taking strategies.
  • Recommendations on time management during clerkships and on exams.
  • Incorporation of AUA supported learning resources: Blackboard, Aquifer case studies, including WISEMD; APGO, Kaplan products, NBME self-assessments.
  • Advice on managing anxiety and stress related to test-taking, including participating in the Clinical Wellness Program and Instagram Community.
