Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment is one type of workplace harassment. It is defined as unwelcome sexual advances; requests for sexual favors; and other physical or verbal behavior of a sexual nature, including behavior of the type described above when submission to the conduct is an explicit or implicit term or condition of employment, submission to or rejection of the conduct is used as the basis for employment decisions affecting the person who did the submitting or rejecting, or the conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual’s work performance or creating an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment.

Regardless of your intent, some actions may be offensive to others.  Examples of sexual harassment include:

  • Unwelcome touching, such as hugging, shoulder rubbing, or pinching;
  • Sexual innuendoes, teasing and other sexual talk such as “dirty” jokes, commenting on a person’s body or repeated unwelcome requests for dates;
  • Display of sexually explicit pictures, magazine, calendars etc;
  • The spread of rumors or stories relating to another person’s gender, sexual conduct or sexual orientation.
