The mission of the Emergency Medicine Training Center is to reduce mortality and minimize disability of the sick and injured by promoting high standards of emergency medical care through quality instruction and practical training.
The Emergency Medicine Training Center (EMTC) has been able to carry out this mission by becoming an accredited American Heart Association International Training Center (AHA ITC). As an AHA ITC, the EMTC team has been able to work closely with the students of the American University of Antigua teaching Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as well as Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (BLS). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) instructors have also been trained. Having PALS instructors has allowed the EMTC to offer PALS courses to local and regional pediatric healthcare providers.
The EMTC has also been able to introduce Antigua’s first official, college level, Emergency Medical Technician Basic and Advanced training programs. Offering these programs has allowed the EMTC to provide Antigua with over 50 well trained EMTs. Training these persons has paved the way for the introduction of Paramedics to Antigua and the neighboring islands. Currently, there are no Paramedics employed by the local EMS provider. It is our vision to change this by offering EMT-P certification and an Associates in Applied Science – Paramedic Degree, by the spring of 2011, through our sister school the American International College of Arts and Sciences-Antigua.
As an AHA ITC, the EMTC has had the welcomed responsibility of introducing Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) educational courses to not only the local Antiguan community but the entire region.
