Community Training

The introduction of the ECC courses has allowed us to address the training needs at both the corporate and community levels.  The following reflects some of the corporate and community organizations that have received training from the EMTC:

V. C Bird International Airport October 2009 to present

  • 50 persons trained in CPR & AED usage
  • 40 persons trained in body mechanics

American University of Antigua – Ongoing

  • BLS & ACLS instructor courses are provided to qualified AUA students.  These students are then used as TAs for ACLS courses.
  • All AUA staff and faculty are encouraged to participate in CPR and AED courses.
  • Over 30 AUA faculty & staff members have successfully completed CPR/AED training.

Antigua & Barbuda Airport Authority –  September 2009 to present

  • 24 students trained in CPR & AED usage
  • EMTC donated AED for installation at VC Bird International Airport, St. John’s Antigua
  • The local television station, ABS TV, conducted a live television interview with the EMTC Program coordinator to ascertain the importance of having an AED located in an airport as well as why the local population should educate themselves on first aid, CPR and AED usage.

Emergency Medical Technician Training (Basic & Advanced)

  • EMT-B training program developed for local EMS.  13 of 14 participants successfully completed the program.  The 300 hour program was completed in November of 2008.
  • April 2010 – 11 students successfully completed the EMT-B program.
  • June 2011 – 20 students successfully completed the EMT-B program along with one (1) EMT-Advanced students

Antigua & Barbuda Police Training Academy – July to August 2009

  • 42 Police cadets trained in First Aid, CPR and AED usage.
  • 11 Fire cades trained in First Aid, CPR and AED usage
  • 3 EMTC instructors, Vernon Solomon, Marlon Destin and Wordsworth Harris, volunteered their time to conduct the First Aid & CPR training.
  • AUA provided the training equipment at no cost to the Policy Academy.
  • 2 Scholarships provided to Antigua & Barbuda Fire Brigade to ensure fire fighters are trained as EMTs. 2 scholarships offered for each EMT-B course provided.

Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) – May 2010

  • First aid, CPR and AED training for electrical lines men.

Jumby Bay Resort – March to May 2009

  • 24 resort employees trained in basic CPR & AED usage.
  • 10 security personnel trained to the level of first responder.

Mount St. John’s Medical Center (MSJMC) – 2009 to Present

  • Key MSJMC personnel have been trained in BLS & ACLS.  BLS sessions are on going for the training of MSJMCs 400+ employees.  40+ critical care personnel have been assisted in further developing their ACLS skills.
  • EMTC partnered with the Mayo Clinic/Gold Cross in providing PALS training to MSJMC physicians and pediatric nurses.
  • 14 Emergency Room Technicians (ERT) were trained to support ER nursing staff.  The broad scope of the training has allowed the ERTs to also be used on the various hospital wards as well as within the operating room theatres.
  • 14 persons trained in ECG/EKG acquisition.
  • Additional personnel from the Cardiology department to be trained in ECG/EKG rhythm strip interpretation.
  • Regional EKG/ECG workshops

United States Air Force – Antigua Air Station (CSR) – 2009 to Present

  • EMTC has provided BLS, ACLS and First Aid training for the Antigua Air Station.
  • Instructor training has been provided for Antigua Air Station as well as their Ascension Island Air station.
  • Antigua Air Station has been established as a Training Site under the direction of the EMTC.
  • Ascension Island Air Station has also become a Training Site under the direction of the EMTC.

United States Naval Ship (USNS) Comfort – May 2009

  • EMTC partnered with USNS Comfort in training 150+ Antiguan health care workers in Basic Life Support training.
  • EMTC partnered with USNS Comfort in training 27 Antiguan health care workers in Advanced Cardiac Life Support training.
