Hurricane Relief and Recovery Initiatives Raise $2,000
AUA’s Hispanic Medical Student Association (HMSA) successfully raised $2,000 for the people of Puerto Rico in the wake of Category 5 Hurricane Maria this semester. Their on-campus empanada sale sold out in a half hour! They also raised funds by hosting a salsa night and received a generous donation from AUA’s Vice President of Community Affairs, Vernon Solomon. Funds raised by their efforts have been designated for Unidos Por Puerto Rico, an initiative launched by the First Lady of Puerto Rico, Beatriz Rossello, in collaboration with the private sector, to provide aid and support to those affected by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. As the organization has stated, “100% of the proceeds will go to helping the victims affected by these natural disasters in Puerto Rico.”
“The money we managed to raise will certainly make a difference to the people of Puerto Rico,” said HMSA President Giovannie Isaac-Coss. Congratulations to the HMSA! You are helping promote the spirit of community that defines AUA.
