AUA Alum, Dr. Kirill Alekseyev, Named Medical Director at New Rehabilitation Hospital

When PAM Rehabilitation Hospital of Dover opened recently, it addressed an important need in the local community. It is the only freestanding medical rehabilitation hospital in Dover, and it provides comprehensive care for patients who have medical issues including stroke, brain or spinal cord injury, neurological disease, or orthopedic conditions.

Dr. Kirill Alekseyev, American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine Class of 2014, was recruited as the medical director of the hospital a year ago and started his new position in October.

“It’s exciting to be part of building this hospital from scratch when it serves such an important role in Dover and the state as a whole,” said Dr. Alekseyev. “There is a high demand for physicians in Delaware, period. But there’s an especially high demand for acute rehabilitation facilities. And our hospital directly addresses that demand.”

PAM Rehabilitation Hospital of Dover offers 34 private rooms and specialized services, such as wound care, prosthetic training, and in-room dialysis. Therapy services include physical therapy, speech language pathology, occupational therapy, and rehabilitation nursing.

After graduating from AUA, Dr. Alekseyev completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York.

“The experience I had at AUA in classes, and later in residency at Kingsbrook, gave me a lot of exposure to the PM&R field,” he said. “I learned a lot from great physicians, and I was excited to bring that expertise here where it is appreciated.”

While at Kingsbrook, Dr. Alekseyev organized a symposium on concussions, featuring leading medical professionals in the field and retired NFL players. He is coordinating a second concussion symposium, a free event open to the public and hosted by PAM Rehabilitation Hospital of Dover in April.

“It’s an important issue, and we have some great speakers, including several Super Bowl champions,” he said. “At the hospital, I’m also helping to develop an outpatient sports clinic at the hospital focusing on concussions and traumatic brain injuries.”
