In December, American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine launched the Made for Medicine Tour in India, featuring AUA brand ambassador and legendary Antiguan cricket player, Sir Vivian Richards.
Stopping in four cities – Chennai, Kolkata, Guwahati, and Hyderabad – the Made for Medicine Tour was open to the public, aiming to connect aspiring medical students with a medical school that produces well-rounded physicians who can practice anywhere in the world. Richards met with prospective students to sing the praises of his native island (including 365 beaches, “one beach for every day of the year”), as well as AUA’s excellent academic reputation.
AUA is part of Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG), India’s largest higher education and healthcare service provider. High School graduates from India can begin a two-year Premedical program at AICASA, Antigua or at Manipal University, India. After successful completion of Premedical program, student will then transfer to AUA’s campus in Antigua to complete their Basic Sciences in two years. Students then finish their medical degree with an intensive two-year Clinical Sciences program at teaching hospitals in the U.S., Canada, UK, or India and by successfully completing licensing examinations (USMLE).
“I feel extremely privileged to be affiliated with AUA and Manipal,” said Richards. “AUA students come from all over the world, and they bring such a positive energy to the island. You can tell they really love being here, and we love having them. More importantly is the caliber of doctors AUA produces. Many are placed in the world’s most prestigious hospitals and credit goes to the school’s hands-on training and supportive community for their success.”
What the Indian press had to say about the Made for Medicine Tour:
• Edex from The New Indian Express: “When we were informed that they follow a US-based curriculum and they are recognized by the Medical Council of India, any doubts about the degree being valid were erased. One can also practice in the US, UK, Canada and, of course, India after completion of the course.”
• The Hindu: “The university offers special scholarships to Indian students based on merit and in-campus housing which not many local educational institutions can boast of, Sir Viv said. ‘Interestingly, the maximum number of students being enrolled in the last two years are from Telangana, particularly from Hyderabad,’ said Sir Viv.”
• InsideNE: “The University has been accredited by the Medical Council of India in November, 2016. Apart from India, medical students who pass out from Manipal’s American University of Antigua are eligible to practice in all 50 US states as well as in the UK and Canada.”
• This Week India: “This is the destination for aspiring students who are focused on taking up medicine and acquiring a global doctorate degree as well as turning out to be well-rounded doctors that we so much need. In a nutshell it is ‘THE MEDICAL INSTITUTION’ that provides ‘quality medical education’ for preparing ‘world-class physicians’ who can practice anywhere in the world.”
• The Statesman: “In their odyssey of warding off medical health problems, the American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine, has struck adamantine bonds with succinct health care and education of highest quality, garnering diverse academic opportunities even for underrepresented minorities, thus attaining a multicultural verve ensuring indubitable professionalism.”
• Northeast Now: “The original ‘Master Blaster’ of world cricket, Sir Vivian Richards believes the university presents an opportunity to experience Antiguan tourism. ‘There can’t be a better combination of academics and tourism than this for anyone wanting to study where we live,’ the legendary cricketer said during his recent visit to Hyderabad.
