AUA students have started a GoFundMe campaign and a donation page on Betterplace.org to raise money for the Antigua and Barbuda Sickle Cell Association. “We are really appealing to the public to make donations,” says Dr. Edda Hadeed, President of the Association. “No donation is too small.”
Sickle Cell Anemia, an inherited condition in which there is not enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body, affects at least 1,000 people in Antigua and Barbuda. There is no cure for Sickle Cell Anemia, but treatment can reduce pain and other health problems.
The complexity and treatment of Sickle Cell Anemia requires highly trained health professionals—as opposed to volunteers—in order for the Association to serve those afflicted in the community. However, due to insufficient fundraising, the Association is currently unable to pay its staff. AUA students have stepped up and are asking our AUA community to help support the Association so it may continue to offer much-needed healthcare to Antigua and Barbuda.
