AUA Hosts “Calling All Men” Men’s Health Symposium

Prominent regional physician Dr. Robin Roberts explored key health issues facing Caribbean men at a symposium hosted by the American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine on Friday, January 18. The event, dubbed “Calling All Men: Men’s Health Symposium,” was a collaboration between AUA and the Medical Benefits Scheme. The symposium took place at the university campus with the support of H.E. The Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda Sir Rodney Williams.

Dr. Roberts, urologist, senior lecturer, and Director of the University of the West Indies School of Clinical Medicine and Research in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, discussed diverse health issues facing men, including prostate cancer, heart disease, self-abusive behaviors, and excessive risk taking. Colin John Jenkins, creator of Men’s Empowerment Network (M.E.N), examined the situation of men in Antigua and Barbuda, who sometimes lack the social and emotional support systems to manage health issues. Vernon Solomon, AUA’s Vice President of Administration and Community Affairs and Director of EMTC, moderated the symposium.

The event’s attendees included members of the medical and legal fraternity, the defense force, immigration services, service clubs, emergency medical services, mental health services, and men’s organizations.
