{"id":898336,"date":"2018-08-27T12:34:14","date_gmt":"2018-08-27T12:34:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/myaua.auamed.net\/wordpress\/?p=898336"},"modified":"2018-08-27T12:34:14","modified_gmt":"2018-08-27T12:34:14","slug":"aua-students-are-raising-money-to-support-sickle-cell-association","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/myaua.auamed.org\/?p=898336","title":{"rendered":"AUA Students are Raising Money to Support Sickle Cell Association"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">AUA students have started a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/global2018\">GoFundMe campaign<\/a> and a donation page on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterplace.org\/\">Betterplace.org<\/a> to raise money for the Antigua and Barbuda Sickle Cell Association. \u201cWe are really appealing to the public to make donations,\u201d says Dr. Edda Hadeed, President of the Association. \u201cNo donation is too small.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sickle Cell Anemia, an inherited condition in which there is not enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body, affects at least 1,000 people in Antigua and Barbuda. There is no cure for Sickle Cell Anemia, but treatment can reduce pain and other health problems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The complexity and treatment of Sickle Cell Anemia requires highly trained health professionals\u2014as opposed to volunteers\u2014in order for the Association to serve those afflicted in the community. However, due to insufficient fundraising, the Association is currently unable to pay its staff.
